Olympic Games 1980 - Moscow

Cyprus
The 22nd Olympiad in Moscow this year will revive once again the Olympic spirit of noble rivalry, mutual understanding, friendship and peaceful coexistence among people. The Olympiads, which started in the Greek legendary times, were traditionally instituted in 776 B.C. and abolished as pagan in 394 A.D. by the Byzantine emperor Theodosius. Once again they were revived in 1896 and ever since they are held at four years intervals (except during the two World Wars). Eighty-five countries will be represented in this year's Olympiad which will be held in Moscow between 19th July and 3rd August. These countries will participate in 21 groups of sports (198 different games). Sailing will be held at Tallinn in Estonia and soccer football in Leningrad, Kiev, and Minsk. Cyprus is participating in Olympic Games for the first time and Cypriot athletes will compete in Sailing, Swimming, Olympic Gymnastics and Jude. The three stamps issued by the Postal Services of this occasion are depicting the games Cyprus is taking part in and they have been designed by the Cypriot artist Andis Ioannides.
