|Scouting is a voluntary youth movement which embraces over 16 million young people from over 150 countries. The movement started in England in 1907 with an experimental boy camp on Brownsea Island. The camp was personally run by the founder of Scouting, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, putting into practice what is written in his book "Scouting for Children" and what nowadays are the accepted principles and methods of Scouting in the world. |
February 22nd, 1982, was the start for celebrations and manifestations all over the world aimed at commemorating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the world-wide youth training movement by Lord Baden-Powell. It coincides with the 125th anniversary of the founder's birth on that day. Celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of the movement will continue until July, 1983, when thousands of Scouts from all over the world will converge on Canada for the 15th World Jamboree.
The first scout groups in Cyprus were formed in 1913. In view of the celebrations for the "Year of the Scout" the Cyprus Scout movement organized in Nicosia, last May, a European Seminar.
The 75th anniversary of the founding of the Scout movement and the 125th anniversary of the birth of its founder are being commemorated in over 60 countries with the issue and circulation of special commemorative sets of stamps. The Department of Postal Services of the Republic of Cyprus will issue a commemorative set, the "Year of the Scout", consisting of three values, i.e. 100, 125 and 175 mils.
