Telecommunications

Telecommunications

:

One of the 7 cents stamp refers to the Mobile Telephone Service which is scheduled for introduction in Cyprus in the last quarter of 1988. The underlying technology is cellular telephony which is a new concept immobile telecommunications and provides used with a system that enables them to keep in touch while on the move. The main advantage of this system is its ability to handle large numbers of callers simultaneously, while making use of a limited number of transmission frequencies. The cellular system operates by dividing the services area into "cells". Each cell is equipped with transmitters and receivers for a number of frequencies which are assigned to it and these frequencies can be re-used within one cell area. The individual calls are all connected to a Mobile Switching Centre (MSC), a computerized centre which locates mobile subscribers for receiving incoming calls and also provides the link between the cellular telephone system and the normal telephone network.

Transportation

Transportation

:

The two 18-cent stamps depict the ultra-modern aircraft Airbus A310 and A320 of the Cyprus National Carrier, the Cyprus Airways, in harmonic co-existence with the flamingos of Larnaca's Salt Lake, adjacent to the city's International Airport. The compatibility of the natural environment has been achieved thanks to the modern technology of the Airbus A310 and A320 aircraft of Cyprus Airways and their low-noise flight operation, which thus allow the flamingos to live peacefully and to multiply next to the busy airport.
