Birth Centenary of Albert Namatjira

Albert Namatjira was the first Indigenous artist to paint and exhibit professionally in a Western style. He was both prodigious and successful. During his lifetime he produced some two thousand pictures and founded a school of painting that still continues among his Western Aranda relatives and other Aranda peoples


The artist
Albert Namatjira was born on 28 July 1902 near Ntaria into the Kngwarriya skin. Like his parents he was baptised as a Christian. During his early life at Hermannsburg he attended the church, lived for part of the time in the boys
