Queen Victoria CYPRUS Overprint Series

Cyprus

Noteable Information

To avoid counterfeiting, British stamps of this period had a number of security features:
  1. The use of watermarked paper.
  2. The incorporation of the plate number on the design of the stamp. In some stamp designs the plate number is prominent (2 1/2d, 4d, 6d, 1sh), whereas in other stamp designs (1/2d, 1d), this is less so. Below is a detail from a British 1d stamp from plate 170.
    Plate example of 1d stamp
  3. The lettering of each stamp, based on its position on the sheet. Philatelists refer to the position using the lettering at the bottom of the stamp. The bottom left letter denotes the row position, whereas the bottom right letter denotes the column.
A note to all philatelists: As with most overprinted stamps, fake overprints may exist, so caution is adviced when purchasing this kind of stamps.
