Europa 2007 - Centenary of Scouting

The theme "Europa" of this year, selected by the Association of European Public Postal Operators (POSTEUROP) and common to all member-states of the Association, is the Centenary of Scouting.

Scouting is a worldwide benevolent youth movement, independent and open to all. It accepts within its ranks young boys and girls from all layers of society, whose common principles are faith in God and the Homeland and the love for their fellow creatures. According to the decision of the World Committee of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, of which Cyprus Scouts Association is an official member, August 1st 1907 has been fixed as starting date of the Scout Movement. On that day, the founder of Scouting, Lord Baden Powell, organized a ten-day camp, which sparked off the development of scouting worldwide.

Nowdays, scouting is the most important youth organization, boasting over 30 million active members in more than 200 countries and areas and it is represented at the United Nations and the Council of Europe.

In Cyprus, scouting is the oldest and most important youth organization, which continues until today its upward march because it is based on healthy principles and offers proper education through healthy occupation, while creating moral and virtuous citizens. On August 1st 2007, events will be organized to celebrate the centenary of the World Scout Movement, the highlights of which will be the World Scout Jamboree in England (28/7-10/08/2007) and the event on Brownsea island, where the first camp took place (1-10 August 2007).
